Our iconic Riesling, the Nadja's Vineyard, was planted in 2001 to a select clone from the Mosel, Germany. In 2015 we had a naturally balanced crop - not too little, not too much. The growing season was favourable to our cool-climate style of Riesling, showcasing the citrus zest that we love. All of the fruit was hand-picked and whole cluster pressed. Three individual tanks were fermented at cool temperatures using a mix of cultured and ambient yeast. Natural sweetness was retained by halting fermentation to achieve a balanced wine. Blended in January and then bottled in March 2016, this wine shows our committment to terroir winegrowing.

Flat Rock was founded in 1999 on a spectacular piece of the Niagara Escarpment known as the Jordan Bench –on a gently rolling slope studded with vines. The winery is a quirky, glass encased, hexagonal masterpiece. Every day we enjoy breathtaking views of the Peninsula and across Lake Ontario to Toronto. The land is everything in this business, and so we have adopted many environmentally responsible technologies to safeguard sustainability.

The Flat Rock team is motivated by two principles: first, make great wine, and second, ensure you have a truly personal wine experience. In the vineyard we ensure low yields, progressive viticulture, and hand picking and sorting. Our winemaker and vineyard manager monitor that the grapes are cropped at extremely low levels to ensure fruit quality and intensity of varietal character. Inside the winery, we’ve got the latest in wine making equipment. At full production Flat Rock will produces a maximum of 15,000 cases!

Our winemaking process ensures the wine reaches its maximum potential. To make a Pinot Noir, for example, we use a 5-level gravity flow system. There’s minimal handling and no harmful pumping. Twenty kilo baskets of handpicked grapes are hand sorted and placed on a conveyor belt that moves them into the de-stemmer crusher. From there, the grapes fall directly into our state-of-the-art 4.5 ton temperature controlled stainless steel fermenters. Every 6 hours we hand-plunge the juice and skins to maximize their colour and tannin. Post fermentation, the wine moves directly to the lower level barrel cellar where it’s aged in 100% French oak barrels and awaits the malolactic fermentation in the spring.

We love what we do and love to share that sense of wonder about the mysteries of the vine with our customers. Our logo has an image of a woman holding a basket of grapes. She’s the embodiment of winemaking. Red is a primary colour – the colour of wine, and of passion, because we are passionate about winemaking! The rocks that are the geological foundation of the winery and vineyard provided our name - Flat Rock Cellars. Taste and enjoy the bounty of our craft!
