Bakeapple is known internationally as the cloudberry. These yellow grape-like berries grow in the bogs and wetlands and are ready for picking in late July and August. Picking spots are well-kept secrets that a friendly local may be willing to divulge. Mellow, honey/apricot like in flavour, this berry is argueably the most cherished of all the Newfoundland wildberry varieties. An excellent topping for ice cream, pancakes and crepes or use as a cooking sauce. Extremely rich in vitamin C.
The Dark Tickle offers a taste of the unique handpicked wild berries of Newfoundland and Labrador: bakeapple (cloudberry), partridgeberry (lingonberry), wild blueberry, squashberry and crowberry. As wild products from a remote location, they are free of the various chemicals nearly always associated with cultivated products. And, we use no additives or preservatives during our cooking and preserving.
We purchase from a network of approximately 100 individual pickers, covering a large area including the top half of the Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland, the coastal regions of southern Labrador, and northeastern Quebec. We employ a relatively small number of people involved in processing. Our plant is registered with and inspected by Agriculture Canada.
You might wonder where our name comes from? A ”˜tickle’ is a narrow salt water channel. It is also the area in Griquet where we were originally located - it's the picture on our labels. And it's 'dark' as it is surrounded by high hills.
